While grating four ounces of fresh ginger for this Fresh Ginger Cake, I tried out two tools. The microplane zester worked well for a while but I found the ginger was getting ‘stringy’. I think it is more useful for grating spices, primarily whole nutmeg. It has a small grating surface and the spice goes directly into one of two containers (the lid and bottom can both be used as spice receptacles). The microplane lid is missing from picture but it is the same as the base, only black in colour.
The second ginger tool I used was one that I picked up in china town. It worked wonderfully for what I needed it for..finely grated ginger. I would definitely recommend it over the microplane for this purpose.
